WINTER HAVEN NAUTICAL CLUB meets the 1st Wednesday of every month. Potluck dinner at 6:30 PM. Bring a dish to pass. Regular membership meeting begins at 7:30 PM at the Club, 695 Avenue K SW.
Commodore Becky Smith called the meeting to order, with the Pledge to the Flag and welcomed everyone to the first meeting of 2008. 37 members were present. Phyllis Ingraham read the minutes from the December Board Meeting. Ronnie Herl read the Treasurer’s report. Guests Eric and DeLynn Imel were introduced and welcomed.

Past Activities for Dec:
Dec 15th – Christmas Party and Installation of 2008 Board. Lucille Tremblay, chairperson. Lucille thanked all those who helped with the event: Frank & Phyllis Ingraham, Mike & Nancy Hall and Sandy Herl. She also thanked them for donating the appetizer platters. Arlene Adams donated a Basket of Cheer that was auctioned. The beautifully decorated cakes were donated by the ladies who attended the cake decorating classes: Margaret Barrett, Phyllis Ingraham, Lucille Tremblay and Becky Smith (theirs was a joint effort). One of the cakes was auctioned and the others were served for dessert. It was a fun evening for everyone.
Activities for January:
January 12th – Mexican Night, Cindy Valich & Mavra Kear, chairpersons. Starts at 5PM. We will have aperitivos of Sabgria & chips and salsa; cena will be tacos, salad, rice, fried ice cream. Admission to the event is 109 Pesos ($10 US) for adults and 55 Pesos ($5 US) for children under six. Entertainment is a surprise!!
January 26th is Winter Haven’s Citrus Parade, David Smith had volunteered their boat for the parade. According to the paperwork from the parade headquarters, there are new rules for the parade entrants. The members voted to not enter the parade this year.
Activities for February:
February 17th (New date!!) - Ladies Day, Margaret Barrett, chairperson. Margaret reported that the ladies will have brunch, beginning at 12:00, and we will have the same wait-staff as last year. The ladies (or their generous husbands) can purchase the following services: haircut, manicure, pedicure. The cost will be $30 for two services. This event is limited to 12 ladies and Margaret will be selling tickets at the February meeting.
CRUISES –JOHN VALICH, Cruise Master
Past Cruises:
Dec 29 – Jan 1 Melbourne Harbor, John Valich, cruise leader. John reported that there were 3 boats on the cruise: Valich, Barrett, Spies. They launched at Titusville. The weather was beautiful and the water was smooth. They had lunch at Cocoa, then proceeded on to Melbourne Harbor. On Sunday, they all went in the Barretts’ boat to Vero to the Lobster Shanty. Monday AM, the Valichs and Barretts departed for home. The Spies stayed until Tuesday.
Cruises for January 2008
January 19-20, Mike H is leading a cruise to Burnt Store Marina at Charlotte harbor. Meet at Perkins Restaurant, at Hwy 60 & 98 in Bartow. Departure time: 8AM. We will go to Mulberry and down 37 to 674 through Sun City to I-75, then south to Sarasota. We will launch at the 10th St ramp at Centennial Park in Sarasota. Bring a lunch to eat on the boat. Mike will need the captain’s name, the boat name, the length and beam of the boat and your phone number. $1.50/ft with a 30’ min. If you are coming in a boat that is 26ft or less and are staying at the Inn, the slip fee is a flat $25.00/night. January 25 – 27 Gasparilla Celebration at Tampa Cruise a Cade. John reported that the weekend rate for the event is $80/person. The rate for Saturday only is $40/person. Children 12 and under are free. There will be lots of activities. If you bring your boat and need electricity, the charge is $10/night. Campers and RVs that need electricity will be charged $10/night. Some of our members a planning to attend on Saturday.
January 9 – 10 (New dates!!) Cruise to Hontoon Island, Bill Barrett cruise leader. Meet at Love’s Truckstop at I-4 and SR559 for an 8AM departure. Launch at Crow’s Bluff/Ed Stone Park, cruise to Hontoon Island for check-in at the park or at Hontoon Landing. Slips at Hontoon Island are on a ‘first come, first served basis’. Then cruise to Sanford for late lunch. Bring food for a communal breakfast on Sunday AM, followed by a cruise to Silver Glen. If you are staying at Hontoon Landing, you will need to contact the resort for reservations, 800-248-2474. In the Riverview building, they have rooms with 2 double beds, $125.00 or 150.00/night. In the Executive building, there are two rooms with a queen bed, $110.00/night, one room with a king bed and kitchen, $165.00/night. You can tour the rooms on their web site: www.hontoon.com

Dick reminded everyone that the club voted to increase the rental fee to $225. The new number for a total, including the deposit, is $390.75. Dick reported that we have no rentals booked at this time.

When you pay your dues, be sure to fill out a renewal application to be certain that the information in our membership directory is correct. David reported that he has ordered 3 ballasts to replace those in the malfunctioning lights in the clubhouse.

Suzanne Guyer thanked everyone for their cards and calls expressing sympathy after her father passed away. Mike & Nancy Hall’s son-in-law, JD, is home now and is walking. Thanks to everyone for your support. JD was severely burned on Thanksgiving Day and he has been in the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga. JD does need donations of blood. The donation should be made to Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, GA for John Daniel Sturgis. Jim Walker has recently had surgery and is scheduled for further surgery later this month. Thanks to everyone for your calls, prayers and expressions of concern.

Old Business:
The 2008 WHNC calendars are available, cost is $7, with $5 going to the club. Please contact Commodore Smith for your calendar. John Valich will contact Mike Britt with the City of Winter Haven for an update on progress with the ditch and the delta. Mike Britt had told John that they are waiting for the funds to begin the work. Commodore Smith reported on the December 21st party for the foster family we ‘adopted’. Thanks to all of you for your donations, there were gifts of clothing, shoes and toys given to all of the children, who were all very appreciative of the gifts. Hot dogs and hamburgers were served, and the evening was lots of fun. The family sends it ‘thanks’ for everything. If you would like to get in touch with the family, please contact Becky.
New Business:
If you are interested in serving on any of the committees, please contact the chairperson of that committee. Everyone’s help is needed. Commodore Smith reported that the kitchen stove is not working properly, will be expensive to repair and needs to be replaced. David Smith volunteered to contact the Fire Marshall regarding the need for the hood and fire suppression system if we replace the stove with a non-commercial stove. Mike Hall has placed a list on our bulletin board of the Lakeland Sail & Power Squadron (LSPS) classes. Mike invited everyone to the LSPS change of watch ceremony and dinner at the Lakeland Yacht Club on January 25th. Cost is $20 per person. Mike will be the new commander of LSPS. Congratulations, Mike. Mike also requested permission to continue to keep the LSPS trailer on the WHNC grounds, as the two groups use the trailer on joint projects throughout the year. The WHNC membership approved the request. Mavra Kear reported that she has been attending meetings of the county Drowning Prevention Task Force. The task force members are coordinating information and links to web sites that will provide much-needed education regarding drowning prevention.
