WINTER HAVEN NAUTICAL CLUB meets the 1st Wednesday of every month. Potluck dinner at 6:30 PM. Bring a dish to pass.  Regular meeting begins at 7:30 PM at the Clubhouse, 695 Avenue K SW.  April  2008 meeting will be April 2 at 7:30 pm.  Website address is www.whnc.biz.  Ideas for the website, contact John Valich.

Commodore Smith called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm with the Pledge to the Flag. 37 members were present.  New members attending were:  Ira and Melissa Sansolo, Dan Jdanowski and Jamie Cortes, and Robert and Susan BecknerRichard Keach was present and he and Patty renewed their membership.  Welcome to all!    Phyllis Ingraham, read the minutes from the February Board Meeting.  Ronnie Herl gave the Treasurers Report and posted on the board. 

ACTIVITIES – Susan Hutchinson, Chairperson

LADIES DAY OUT– FEB 17 – Margaret Barrett reported 11 women attended.  There were six students and Brenda Smith, instructor, from Ridge Career Center.  Seven ladies got a pedicure, 10 got manicures and 1 a haircut.  Lucille Tremblay made and donated gift bags for all attendees, Arlene Adams brought Joanne’s favorite which we used to dedicate the day to Joanne’s memory.  Delsha Runkle demonstrated NuSkin wrinkle remover and a good time was had by all. Lucille and Margaret prepared and donated the brunch.  $120.00 was donated to the Skills USA club at Ridge Career Center and $210 was given to our club.

MYSTERY LAND CRUISE – MARCH 24 – Margaret and Bill Barrett reported we had 24 adults 2 children attend.  We went to the TECO Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach where we saw a couple of manatees, several varieties of fish, birds, ducks, and plants.  Some viewed a movie about manatee history and habits.  It was a fun and educational day.  Ira Sansolo and Mavra Kear helped a young boy who collapsed in the parking lot upon our arrival.  Ira reported that the parents called him after the event to thank him and report that their son was okay.  We ended the day at Alpha Pizza and Greek Restaurant in Apollo Beach.  Thank you Jim and Phyllis Walker for planning a very successful land cruise!

Pat Wells reported that she went to a scheduled Wedding Show at Belks but there was no show.  She did hand out some Club rental brochures and talked to a young lady who just got engaged about renting the club.  

ORANGE CUP REGATTA – MARCH 1 & 2Mike and Nancy Hall thanked everyone who came and worked  for the two days.  After the final figures and the 50/50 split with Lakeland Sail and Power Club, Nancy presented our club with a check for $1170.43.  Great work!

ITALIAN NIGHT WITH FASHIONS BY JACQUELINE  – MARCH 15 – 5PM – Adults $10 and Children under 12 - $5 – Rosemary Krencisz and Phyllis Ingraham are preparing spaghetti with homemade sauce and meatballs, tossed salad and dessert and dedicating this night to the memory of Joanne Cook.  Come on over to the club, eat, and then see unique fashions only available at the club!


It was announced that we will not participate in the Lake Wales Boat races on April 5. 



PROGRESSIVE DINNER-APRIL 27- Margaret Barrett is chairing this event.  We will meet at the Club at 1:45 pm and then carpool to the American Legion on Avenue M for appetizers at 2 pm, come back to WHNC for steak dinner, and then go to Littrells for dessert, visiting and swimming.  Tickets will be available at the April meeting for $25 a couple and $6.00 for children 11 and under. Come and eat all day long!  Call Margaret at 965-7629 to reserve your place.

YARD SALE – MAY 17 – PAT WELLS reported that a table can be rented for $10.00 to sell your things.  Please start saving items for the Club table.

CHRISTMAS PARTY – DECEMBER 13- Suzanne Guyer has offered to chair the party at the club.  She will arrange for dinner and professional after dinner entertainment for about the same as we paid last year ($25 per person)  Margaret Barrett reported that she contacted the American Legion.  They will prepare dinner for us at their club with a private room and then we can stay for the entertainment which the Legion provides every Saturday.  The cost would be approximately $15.00 per person.  We would not know for sure if we could have December 13th until the middle of June when the Legion calendar is voted on.  The consensus of the club was to proceed with the Legion plan and use our Club if we can’t get the date at the American Legion.

CRUISES – John Valich, Cruise Master

HONTOON ISLAND CRUISE – FEB 9-10 – Bill Barrett, cruise leader, reported that we had 7 boats and 20 people on the cruise.  4 boats traveled from Loves after having breakfast with members Jim and Phyllis Walker and friends Leonard and Ruth Garner.   We have never seen Hontoon so filled.  CFC Club was there and after we got checked in almost all the slips were filled.  We took 3 boats and 16 people down to Sanford and had lunch at Captains Cove.  Slow zones were posted for almost the entire trip so it took us all day.  We had a dock party in the early evening and then most retired to the sleeping quarters.  Sunday morning was quite cool.  We cooked on the docks and had a great breakfast even though we were short 391 pounds of bacon! Boats attending:  Grin n Barrett, Double Nickels, Awesome Duck, Budget Buster, Malibu I, Mental Floss and Family Affair. 

TARPON SPRINGS/CALADESI CRUISEMARCH 8-9 - John Valich, cruise leader, gave a dismal weather  report and said that we would not go to Tarpon but launch at Gulfport and travel to Caladesi State Park.  Overnite stay at Caladesi is $20 per night, including electricity.  If not staying overnight it is $4 per boat for all day docking.   We will have a community dinner Saturday evening and breakfast Sunday morning.  If you plan to go, please contact John at 669-8087.

BURNT STORE CRUISE – MARCH  29 – 30 Mike Hall announced this is cruise is not possible.  There is a big boat show scheduled that weekend and no slips are available for us.   

IMPROMPTU CRUISE – MARCH 29 OR 30John will notify everyone via telephone committee when a plan is formed. 

CRESCENT LAKE CRUISE – APRIL 12-13 – Bill Barrett, Cruise leader for Jim Walker. We will leave Loves Truck Stop at Route 559 and I- 4 exit 44 at 8:00 am.  If you want to eat breakfast at Arbys, arrive early.  We will trailer to Ed Stone Park on Route 44 near Deland. After launching, we will go north on the St. John’s River to Dunn’s Creek and follow that into Crescent Lake.  There is a small restaurant at the extreme south end of the lake.  We will eat lunch there.  After lunch, we will cruise back Dunn’s Creek to Georgia Boys Fish Camp.  You can look up their website at www.georgiaboysfishcamp.com.  They have cabins and motel rooms starting at $65.00 per night.  The price of the room includes boat parking.  There are slips at the dock without electricity.  Caution:  due to low water, we may not be able to get the boats into the dock.  If so, we will have to proceed north to Palatka and stay overnight or this could be a one-day cruise returning late to Ed Stone Park.   Because of the situation, the cruise leader needs to hear (before the April meeting) from anyone who is planning to go under any of the above circumstances.  Please call Bill at 965-7629 or 206-7451 asap.   If people are interested, more information and discussion will take place at the April meeting, but Bill still needs to know  your thoughts and plans BEFORE the April meeting.  

TENN-TOMBIGBEE WATERWAY CRUISE – MAY 3-18.  Bill Barrett reported that the meeting for this cruise will be Wednesday, April 16, 7:00 pm at the Club.  Please come to hear about this 2 week adventure!   

RENTALS – Dick Littrell

Dick reported pending rentals on:  April 5, May 31, June 7, and September 20.  An already paid rental is scheduled May 10.  Check with Dick before making plans for any of these dates at the club.  

The Bass Club meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month at the Club.

HARBOR & GROUNDS – David Hutchinson


David asked and received volunteers to assess the boards in the dock and determine which need to be replaced.  When the work is done, Bob Krencisz will put the names of contributors on the boards.  Lamar Middleton, Phil Herl, Mike Hall, Bill Barrett and Frank Ingraham will get together and plan a day to start this project.

 HOUSEKEEPING  – Pat Wells

WORK DAY – APRIL 19 – 8:00 am.  Please come to help spruce up the club.  Future work days are scheduled for June 14, August 9, and October 4.  Pat thanked Dick and Jackie for hosting the March membership meeting.  April’s hosts are Dave and Becky.  Please sign up for a turn as hosts.  Calendar is posted on the refrigerator. Pat has posted rules in the kitchen and on the porch.  Please read these notices.  She also reported that the hot water heater is turned off until we need hot water.  If you turn it on, please turn it off when you are done.  TECO told Pat this will save on our electric bill. 

Great American Clean Up Day on March 15th _ Pat made arrangements with Winter Haven Coordinator, Frances Stebbins, to pick up gloves and trash bags for our members to participate in the Great American Clean Up Day.  The gloves and bags and a sign in sheet will be on the porch Saturday.  Please come, take a walk or drive, pick up trash and deposit it in our dumpster.  


WAYS AND MEANS – Margaret Barrett

First meeting was held on February 13.  Susan Hutchinson is announcing the pizza sale that we decided on that night.  Becky Smith is announcing the Membership Drive to begin tonight. Pat Wells is announcing the Belk’s Wedding Show and proposed participation in the Great American Clean Up Day as a result of that meeting.  Membership, Publicity, Community service and Rentals were identified as our major thrusts this year.  The next meeting is Wednesday, March 12 at 6:00 at the club.  Everyone and all ideas are welcome!!!!


MEMBERSHIP – Amber Herl

To date, we have 31 paid members for 2008.  

Commodore Smith reported that a Membership Drive is beginning tonight and runs until the June meeting.  The member bringing in the most new members will receive a prize.  Get applications at the club or on line and remember to enter your name on the reference line.

RECYCLING COMMITTEE – Frank Ingraham

We had $46.50 in cans this month.  Keep bringing in aluminum and all metals for recycling.  If you need someone to pick up your metal, contact Frank at 967-1768.

OLD BUSINESS:  Dick Littrell reported on his meeting with our next door neighbors.  Becky will contact Board Members to discuss the proposed fence, gate, ramp and dock.  WHNC needs to send a letter of agreement to the Chain of Lake Marine Storage so they can obtain a SWIFTMUD permit to complete their facilities.  Dick recommends the Board act as quickly as possible.    

Becky announced that she has tri-fold brochures for advertisement and rental purposes.  Please contact her to get some.  Ira announced that he can get 500 premium business cards free until March 15th.  

Mike Hall announced the Lakeland Sail and Power Club’s event on March 11th at 7:00 pm at the Presbyterian Home on Lakeside Ave, Lakeland. 

Marty Kidwell wants to hear from people interested in performing and/or working at SHOW TIME on June 28, 2008.  Please get your creative juices flowing and call Marty at 439-2087.
