WINTER HAVEN NAUTICAL CLUB meets the 1st Wednesday of every month. Potluck dinner at 6:30 PM. Bring a dish to pass.  Regular meeting begins at 7:30 PM at the Clubhouse, 695 Avenue K SW.  The June meeting will be June 4, 2008. Website address is www.whnc.biz.  Ideas for the website, contact John Valich.

Commodore Smith called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm with the Pledge to the Flag. 31 members were present.  Phyllis Ingraham, read the minutes from the April Board Meeting.  Ronnie Herl gave the Treasurers Report and posted it on the board.

ACTIVITIES – Susan Hutchinson, Chairperson

SUSAN asked for the following reports:

PROGRESSIVE DINNER-APRIL 27- Margaret Barrett reported that there were 41 adults and 5 children in attendance.  We met at the Club at 1:45 pm and then carpooled to the American Legion on Avenue M for appetizers.  The chefs, Dave Smith and Mike Hall stayed behind and got the steaks ready.  Steak dinner was ready about 3:30.  We ate and then went to Littrells for dessert; visiting and several people enjoyed swimming.  Thank you all for your help and donations.  Arlene and Barbi did a wonderful job with the desserts and thanked all who donated to make the end of meal perfect!  Profit was $180.00

FLEA MARKET/YARD SALE – MAY 17 8am until 1 pm– PAT WELLS reported that a table can be rented for $10.00 to sell your things.  You have your choice of setting up inside, outside or on the porch.   Please bring in items for the Club table. Set up will start Friday evening.  We will sell breakfast and lunch the day of the sale. The Bloodmobile will be parked at the road in front of the Club.  Please donate.  Pat thanked Bob Beckner for promoting the sale and the Club on Craig’s List.  She got a call from Miami from someone who wants to bring a boat to sell.

CHRISTMAS PARTY – DECEMBER 13, 2008.  As you know, going to the American Legion for the Progressive Dinner provided us a chance to preview the Lakeside Room in which we can have the Christmas Party/Installation of Officers.

There were a few negative comments concerning smoking in the building.  The Lakeside Room is non-smoking but smoking is allowed in the bar and big meeting room.  There was a complaint that the whole building stinks like smoke.  There are two proposals for the Christmas Party:

1.   A catered meal at our Clubhouse followed by professional entertainment for about the same price as last year.

A catered meal at the American Legion followed by  the Legion’s entertainment and dancing with the cost being less than last year

If you plan to attend the Christmas Party, please call Susan Hutchinson at 293-6956 or e-mail at thegreatozandco@webtv.net and tell her your preference.  The decision must be made at the June membership meeting.  MAJORITY WILL RULE, SO VOTE.

SHRIMP BOIL – Sunday, June 8, 2008 at 5 pm.  Mike and Nancy Hall will chair this event.  The menu includes fresh boiled hot and cold shrimp and oysters.  The price will be approximately $10 per person.  Mike asked everyone to bring a side dish.  A firm price will be announced at the June meeting.

WINE AND CHEESE TASTING AND SHOWTIME - JUNE 28, 2008 WINE tasting AT 5 PM, heavy hors d'oeuvres with SHOWTIME AT 7:30 PM.  Becky Smith and Marty Kidwell are chairing this fun event.  Becky announced that Marty has 14 acts for ShowtimeYou don’t want to miss them!  The price is $20 per person (any age) Fliers have been sent to other clubs and as of this date, some Daytona Club members are coming and are participants in Showtime. Please pass the word to your friends, relatives and neighbors.  Let’s make this the best Showtime yet!

CRUISES – John Valich, Cruise Master

CRESCENT LAKE CRUISE – APRIL 12-13 – Bill Barrett, Cruise leader for Jim Walker. We left Loves Truck Stop at Route 559 and I- 4 exit 44 at 8:00 am.  We trailered to Ed Stone Park on Route 44 near Deland. After launching, Mike Hall became the leader because Grin ‘n Barrett’s one engine wouldn’t run.  Barrett’s went home to Auburndale and switched boats.  The rest of the cruise went north on the St. John’s River to Dunn’s Creek and followed that into Crescent Lake.  The small restaurant at the extreme south end of the lake was closed down.  The group found food at the campground and had lunch.  They continued on to Palatka and made arrangements with Reggie to ride the Party Bus to Gator’s Dockside Restaurant across the river at 8 pm.  Barrett’s arrived at the restaurant in Big Bob at  7:30 pm.  Rooms at Quality Inn, Palatka were $79.99 with free docking.  Stayaboards paid $35.95 for a dock with electric.  The group had breakfast at the Quality Inn, fueled up and headed south on the river.  Bill Barrett led the way back in the chilly weather and rough Lake George crossing.  18 people on 5 boats participated.

TENN-TOMBIGBEE WATERWAY CRUISE – MAY 3-18.  Cancelled

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND CRUISE – MAY 24-26, 2008 – RALPH KEAR, cruise leader.  John reported for Ralph that the destination of the cruise is Legacy Harbor Marina (formerly Centennial Harbor) in Fort Myers.  Slip rates are $1.50 per foot (no minimum length) including electric, water and cable.  Motel rooms are $129 a night for double occupancy, $169 a night for 4 people.  Three launch points were mentioned.  Please call Ralph at 644-1477 to tell him that you are going and when and where you want to launch.  The choices mentioned were Friday at Gulfport Marina (120 miles to Legacy), Saturday at Marina Park, Venice (70 miles to Legacy) or Saturday at Laishley Municipal Marina, Punta Gorda (40 miles to Legacy).  If we have people leaving from different places, please tell Ralph if you are willing to lead from your chosen departure point.

Bring chips, drinks, etc.  Donations will be collected to cover the cost of hotdogs and buns.

Discussion was held in April on the Adopt a Highway program and a vote was taken.  We need people willing to take a turn picking up litter and trash on Route 540 from Overlook to Winterset.  It will be necessary to clean up the roadway 4 times a year for 2 years.  In return, our name will be on a road sign stating that we have adopted that 2 mile stretch of road. Please call or e-mail your comments to Margaret at 965-7629 or MBarr227@aol.com.  So far, there has been no response.
