WINTER HAVEN NAUTICAL CLUB meets the 1st Wednesday of every month. Potluck dinner at 6:30 PM. Bring a dish to pass. December meeting begins at 8:00 PM at 695 Avenue K SW. Website address is HYPERLINK "http://www.whnc.biz/"www.whnc.biz.
Commodore Smith called the meeting to order at 7:35 pm with the Pledge to the Flag. 24 members were present.
David Smith asked everyone to honor Jim Walker in a prayer lead by Gale Guyer. Jim died earlier in the day after a short battle with cancer. Jim has served the club as Vice Commodore and Cruise Leader as well as a very active, dedicated member. Sunshine chairperson, Susanne Guyer, read a poem that she wrote to honor Jim’s life. He will be greatly missed by all.
Phyllis Ingraham, read the minutes from the October Board Meeting. Ronnie Herl gave the Treasurers Report and posted it on the board. He reported that he received the Tax Bill for the club and will be paying that before the November 30th deadline so we pay the minimum of $3,625.55. Also, the Bank holding the mortgage has changed and he will be making sure that the payments are made to the correct institution.
Guests, Pam and Jack Emery, were introduced by Dick Littrell.
ACTIVITIES – Susan Hutchinson, Chairperson
Fall Fun Day – Oct 11th – Becky reported that the day started with the Scavenger Hunt. She thanked Richard Emery for donating a boat to be used for this event. There were problems with the jugs being cut loose or having things written on them. Other than that the hunt went well with Lucille Tremblay winning the solving phrase, after several hints. After a lunch, the participants had fun with a pumpkin carving contest, won by Amber Herl, a cake walk, with several winners, mostly the Hutchinson’s and the “Trunk or Treat”. Several children participated in the costume contest. There was only one person attending other than club members and family. The profit for the day was $101.00, and lots of fun.
Downtown Halloween Winter Haven – Oct 25th – Susan Hutchinson attended this with the display board of the club. She, Amber and Becky handed out candy until it was gone. They all feel it is a very worthwhile endeavor to get involved in next year. David Smith said he was amazed at the number of people that attended the event. Next year they will try to get more volunteers and will need more candy.
Halloween at the Valich’s – Oct 31st – John reported that he had only the Hutchinson’s, Kear’s and Littrell’s attend this event. Being on Halloween, most members chose to stay at home to receive “trick or treaters” at their own residence. It was a fun evening for those in attendance.
Chili Dinner and Chinese Auction – Nov 1st – Becky and Arlene Adams reported on this event. It was well attended and there was plenty of Chili available. Chili was donated by Becky, Arlene, Marty Kidwell, Nancy Hall and Jackie Littrell. Dessert was supplied by Cheryl Burgess and Susan Hutchinson. The Chinese Auction was fun, as usual. The 1st winner drawn was Gale Guyer who chose to keep his gift and let others keep what they had won.
Roar ‘N Soar – Nov 8th & 9th – Becky read the list of volunteers working for this event. She asked them to pick up parking permits and arm bands before leaving this evening. It takes place at “Fantasy of Flight” this weekend and will include planes, cars and boats. It will be a very important fundraiser for the club.
Home Interior Shopping – Nov 15th – cancelled due to Loretta Bise retiring.
Planning Meeting – Nov 12th – 7 PM – A very important meeting to plan events and cruises for 2009. Susan reminded members that, if you chair an event, you do not have to pay for it out of your own pocket, you should submit receipts for all expenses. Events need not be at the club, even one day events like the Mystery Land Cruise can be done more than once a year. Bring your ideas.
Thanksgiving Dinner/Club Decorating – Nov 23rd – 4 PM - This is a free event for all club members and their family. Lucille Tremblay and Pat Wells volunteered to cook turkeys for the meal. Just bring a dish to pass. After dinner, the club needs to be decorated for the holidays. Your help will be appreciated.
Work Day – Nov 11th – David Smith suggested this day be changed due to too many things going on with the Roar ‘N Soar and the services for Jim Walker. He suggested the carpet be cleaned, if possible, for the Holidays. He offered to pay for the carpet cleaning. Work day changed to Nov 22nd.
Annual Boat Parade – Dec 6th – Susan Hutchinson confirmed Winter Haven will host the Christmas Boat Parade. WHNC has been asked to provide judges for the decorated boats,. Further information will be available at the December meeting.
Voting for Officers 2009 – Dec 3rd General Membership Meeting – Becky reminded all members that the Dec meeting starts at 8 PM with the voting of officers from 6 PM until 8 PM. The Pot Luck dinner for the evening will be during the voting time.
Christmas Party/Installation of Officers – Dec 13th – This years party will be held at the American Legion Becky reported for Margaret Barrett. Social hour will begin at 5 PM with cheese and crackers, meatballs and mini hot dogs for social hour. Each person will get a drink chip with their cost of dinner. Dinner will be at 6 PM with Baked Chicken, Pork Roast, Potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn, Cole slaw, rolls, and coffee or iced tea with the meal. The cost is $15.00 per person and is due at the December General Membership meeting. This is the only time of the year we all dress-up so you may not recognize the members!
CRUISES - Dick Littrell substituted for John Valich, Cruise Master
Caladese Island – Oct 18th – Ronnie Herl reported that he and Amber and his parents, Phil and Sandy went on this cruise. They took the inside route going out and the outside route coming back. There was great weather, a little cool at night, but warm in the day. Other than Family Affair having a problem, it was a very relaxing and great week end.
St. Augustine-Christmas Lights – Nov 28th to 30th – Dick Littrell will lead this cruise. Call him if you are interested in going. He will need the information to pre-register everyone. He plans to launch at Daytona Beach at the Halifax Marina on Friday. Call him ASAP.

OLD BUSINESS
Becky reported that the work is progressing with the ditch. She described the progress to those who have not been able to check it out. The delta is being cleared quite well. We should be able to use the docks once they are finished.
Becky asked again for any input on raising funds or raising dues. There will be no increase at this time but if it is necessary in the future, the Board will make this decision. The answer to the financial problem would be solved if we could get new members.
Frank Ingraham reported that he would once again be collecting toys for the “Toys for Tots” organization. This year, with the poor economy, it will be an extra strain on many families. Any donations, toys or money, will be greatly appreciated.
Becky asked if the club would like to sponsor a needy family as well, or help the same family of 8 children that are still with the foster parents. The members voted to support the same family from last year. Becky will get a list of sizes and needs for the children and e-mail everyone with the information.
50/50 was won by Gale Guyer, in the amount of $15.00.
CLASSIFIED AD $5.00. SEE MARGARET BARRETT
Here is the list from Brenda with sizes, etc., for the foster children: Please let me know if you want to help provide Christmas for the kids this year. Also, if we can get things together we might have the party for them on December 14, day after our Christmas party. If that does not work, then we will shoot for December 20.
