Economic Downturn and My Boating - John Valich

Well like everyone else I have been taking a beating with the few stocks I play with and my 401k retirement fund. Fortunately, or maybe not, I have 20+ years to work before I am eligible to retire per Uncle Sam.

So with that said, how will this affect my boating? Not much. My strategy hasn't changed. I will take every opportunity to get out in the water. After all isn't that why we have our boats?

My Strategy:

1. I will be more careful as to the distance I boat. Looking for a closer launch point that will cut the fuel used but still give me a fair amount of time with the wind in my face.

2. Instead of eating a restaurants when on a cruise, eating aboard is definitely a money saver and many times the food is better!

3. I've re-evaluated what bells and whistles I had planned to add to the boat. Projects like adding Radar will be put off, upgrading the cabin speakers, and underwater lighting off the stern will be delayed a bit. Frankly, the toys are cool but getting out on the boat is better!

So that is my plan. Using the boat as much as possible. As we all know, the more you use your boat the fewer problems you have with it, not to mention, I didn't buy it to let it sit in storage dry-docked on it's trailer!
